Erie City School District serves around 7,000 elementary students across 13 schools in 2024–25, with a diverse student body (64% minority) at a 13:1 student-teacher ratio.However, academic performance trails state averages—just 11% proficiency in math (vs 35% statewide) and 23% in reading (vs 53%).To address these gaps, Erie has launched after-school “Anchor” and summer “Sail” literacy programs offering small-group reading instruction with thematic ties to classroom lessons. Incentives like field trips and school supplies are boosting attendance and engagement.
Meanwhile, high-performing suburban schools, like Klein Elementary (62% math, 77% reading proficiency), offer models for replication. By combining targeted intervention, community incentives, and benchmarking against local success stories, Erie is setting the stage for stronger, more equitable elementary education.
