Prairie Vale Elementary School in Edmond, Oklahoma, teaches children from pre-K through third grade and has the feel of a close, neighborhood school. A little over 520 students attend, and the classes stay reasonably small, with a student-teacher ratio of about 15 to 1. Because of that, teachers can actually get to know their students instead of rushing from one group to the next. Academically, Prairie Vale holds its own. Roughly two-thirds of the kids reach grade-level expectations in math, and close to 47% do so in reading. The numbers show that students generally perform stronger in math, but both subjects get plenty of attention through extra support, enrichment lessons, and practical, hands-on activities that work well for younger learners. Most students are White, though the school does include children from Hispanic, Asian, African American, Native American, and mixed-race families, giving it a modest but healthy sense of diversity. With funding near $10,000 per student and parents who stay involved, the school has built a warm, steady environment that families in the area appreciate.
