Lorain City School District serves roughly 5,935 PK–12 students, including ten elementary schools, with a 16:1 student–teacher ratio and 80% minority enrollment. Elementary proficiency levels remain low—28% in reading and 16% in math, and the district was recently released from Academic Distress amid ongoing academic challenges.
To turn the tide, Lorain launched its “We Believe” strategic plan, investing in fine arts, robust special-ed and ELL services, and early literacy supports.
Schools like Toni Wofford Morrison, Larkmoor, and Helen Steiner Rice are serving as excellence models. By combining targeted literacy programs, data-driven interventions, and community-engaged enrichment, Lorain is positioning itself for stronger, more equitable elementary education district-wide.
