Being Updated
PS/IS 218 Rafael Hernandez Dual Language Magnet School is celebrating the success of its 2026 “Bilingual Banquet” where students showcased their bilingual skills in English and Spanish through theatrical performances. The school just launched a new International Studies track for middle school students to learn about world economies and take part in virtual exchange programs. The campus also has strong parent involvement with its “Dual Language Families” workshops that encourage biliteracy at home.
Q1. How does PS/IS 218’s “Dual Language” model support students in achieving full fluency in English and Spanish?
Ans. Core instruction is provided in both languages for academic mastery and naturally becoming biliterate and bicultural.
Q2. Does PS/IS 218 provide any special assistance to families who are not proficient in their child’s second language?
Ans. We have “Language Bridge” resources for parents that include tools and translated materials to support homework and school events.
Q3. What programs does PS/IS 218 have to celebrate the diversity of their student population?
Ans. Students can demonstrate their fluency in performance and research projects at our annual “Hispanic Heritage Month” and multicultural festivals.
Q4. How is PS/IS 218 using 1:1 technology integration to change how middle school students do research?
Ans. The tablets issued to students allow them to access digital libraries in both languages, which allow them to compare different perspectives on historical topics from across the world.
Q5. Does PS/IS 218 have a student club that centers on bilingual creative writing or poetry?
Ans. Our “Dual-Voice Writers” club gives students a chance to create original writings in both English and Spanish, celebrating their unique bilingual identity.
