Scroggs Elementary sits off Culbreth Road, tucked between a quiet stretch of trees and the soft hum of the Southern Village neighborhood. It’s one of those schools that still feels small, even in a growing town. Mornings begin with teachers greeting families by name, and there’s always the smell of fresh coffee coming from the PTA table near the entrance. The atmosphere is calm and organized, not rushed, not loud, just steady and welcoming. The school serves roughly 460 students, keeping class sizes small with a student–teacher ratio close to 14:1. That balance shows in the classroom — teachers have time to pause, explain, and really connect. Across North Carolina, the average math proficiency sits around 51 percent, but Scroggs stays well ahead at nearly 72 percent. Parents often compare it with nearby schools like McDougle and Glenwood, both strong in academics, yet Scroggs stands out for its creative energy. It’s a place where science projects and art shows share equal importance, and where curiosity is celebrated as much as test scores.
The Southern Village area around the school blends suburban comfort with walkable streets and a strong sense of community. Families enjoy parks, bike paths, and the weekend farmers’ market just a few minutes away. A three-bedroom rental home here usually ranges from $2,000 to $2,400 per month, depending on the street, but families say the location and school quality make it worth every bit. There aren’t any celebrity alumni tied to Scroggs, but plenty of former students have gone on to become teachers, counselors, and musicians in the Triangle. Some even return to help at the same school festivals they once attended as children. That sense of coming full circle of staying connected defines the school more than any headline ever could.

Being Updated
In October 2025, Scroggs Elementary held its annual “Innovation Day,” a hands-on learning event where classrooms turned into creative labs. Students built simple machines, wrote short plays explaining inventions, and presented mini-exhibits for parents. The goal wasn’t competition, it was discovery. Teachers said the biggest win came from watching students explain what they built in their own words, their faces lit with pride.
