Two local teens raised $25,000 to open a year-long school food pantry on campus, which is getting a lot of good attention for Clairemont Canyons Academy. Sydney Scelfo and Ava Halls, both high school students, led the fundraising campaign through community events like bake sales, car washes, and restaurant raffles. They raised enough money to keep the pantry open for a whole year, which is the first time in Feeding San Diego's history that a student-led effort has done this. The pantry is now open and hopes to help about 50 families twice a month. It will add to existing meal programs like free or reduced-price lunches and breakfast in the classroom. Principal Victoria Peters talked about how important the program is for the school's diverse families, many of whom qualify for free or reduced-price meals. The success story shows that the community is very involved and promises to keep helping as the students plan more fundraising to keep the program going in the future.
