Being Updated
Bethune???????????????? K-8 School is energized by capturing the interest of families and local educators after the San Diego Unified School District officially announced that the school will keep serving students up to 8th grade, thus preserving its K-8 structure for the next academic year. Previously there had been a plan to move grades 6 through 8 to middle schools, and as a result, parents and staff were concerned about the loss of student continuity and school culture. Consequently, these groups responded by mobilizing support for the retention of the coeducation of older and younger students at one school, which they considered advantageous because of, among other things, continuous relationships, easy transitions from one grade to another, and increased leadership possibilities for older students. The district officials made the final call to keep Bethune’s existing structure referring to the school as a "unique community identity" and the "engagement of the families."
