The Central San Joaquin Valley, where Merced, California, is located, has a population of about 88,000 people. It has a history of farming and is becoming more culturally rich. The district has about 19 elementary schools and serves a very diverse group of students, with 89% of them being minorities (mostly Hispanic) and a student-teacher ratio of about 25:1. The districts overall math and reading skills are below the state average in California, but individual schools are different, and some have programs that focus on literacy and basic academics. Merced neighborhoods are known for their cultural diversity and community involvement. Many schools have trouble meeting state academic standards, but Merced elementary schools offer a wide range of basic lessons in a culturally rich and family-friendly setting.
