Being Updated
Lanai Road Elementary continues its strong academic record into 2025-26, maintaining its position as one of the top-ranked public elementary schools in all of Los Angeles County. Under Principal Mario Thompson, the school's Art Docent Program and garden curriculum run as community-supported enrichment funded through parent involvement. The school is located in one of the most sought-after residential corridors in the San Fernando Valley, and the Lanai Lions community remains one of the most engaged parent bodies at any LAUSD elementary campus.
Q1. What is the Art Docent Program at Lanai Road, and how does it work?
Ans. The Art Docent Program is one of Lanai Road's most distinctive features. Parent volunteers who have an interest in fine art — not necessarily formal training — are trained to lead hands-on art lessons in their child's classroom. Each participating classroom gets regular art instruction throughout the year that would otherwise not exist given LAUSD's budget constraints. It's a parent-powered program, and reviews from current families specifically cite it as one of the things that makes Lanai Road's enrichment feel above what a public school of this size would normally offer.
Q2. Is Lanai Road's high performance driven by its demographics, or is the school doing something different?
Ans. Both are true, and being honest about it matters. Lanai Road has only 12% economically disadvantaged students and a student body that is 74% White — demographics that correlate with higher test scores across California. That context explains some of the performance gap versus schools like Emelita Street. At the same time, SchoolDigger data shows Lanai Road's scores hold up across student subgroups, including female students, male students, and disabled students. The school ranks 16th in all of LAUSD. Both the demographics and the instruction quality are real factors.
Q3. What enrichment programs does Lanai Road offer beyond the Art Docent Program?
Ans. The school has a garden that ties into science and social studies curriculum, a strong PE program, and music instruction. The parent association (LRPTO) runs events, including fundraisers that fund classroom supplies, enrichment activities, and field trips beyond what LAUSD provides. Parent involvement at Lanai Road is consistently described in reviews as one of its strongest community assets — the school and parent organization operate in a genuine partnership.
Q4. What is the school's mascot, and what is the campus culture like?
Ans. The mascot is the Lanai Lions. Parent reviews describe the campus as welcoming — several mention that the school was notably inclusive when their family moved into the area mid-year. Principal Mario Thompson is specifically called out in reviews as approachable and visible. For a school of 575 students, Lanai Road has a neighborhood school feel that's unusual for a campus this academically competitive.
Q5. What middle school do Lanai Road students typically attend?
Ans. Lanai Road students typically transition to Portola Middle School or apply to LAUSD magnet programs. El Camino Real Charter High School is the nearest high school and the most common destination for Lanai families. Families interested in continuing an academically rigorous pathway should start researching middle school magnet options in 4th grade — the LAUSD magnet application timeline is earlier than most families realize when they're new to the district.
