Vermont has gained recognition as one of the states that provide top-quality middle schools through both financial support from the state and the use of a more personalized and directed approach to learning. Vermont has ranked consistently in the top five in the nation for its public school quality, with a low student-to-teacher ratio (approximately 10.5:1) compared to other states in the U.S. There are approximately 272 public and private middle schools in Vermont, and most of these schools have received favorable marks from statewide proficiency testing in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science. Vermont Town Tuitioning system allows for greater school choice among families in the state, and the Vermont Education Quality Standards (2025) now focus on using research-based practices for instruction and equitable access to learning.
