Rapid City is South Dakota second-largest city, with a population of about 79,894 in 2025. People call it the "Gateway to the Black Hills." The city economy is growing quickly because there are many tourists, Ellsworth Air Force Base is stable, and the healthcare sector is growing quickly. There are life-sized bronze statues of U.S. presidents in the middle of town, which is why it is called the "City of Presidents." In addition, it is the center of five states. A mountain ridge known as "The Gap" divides the community. It used to separate the eastern and western parts of the city where people lived. The economy of Rapid City is strong, and the unemployment rate is usually below 3% in 2025. The Rapid City Area Schools, which include East, North, South, Southwest, and West Middle Schools, help support this growing population, which has been growing steadily since the 2020 census.
