The middle school years (grades 6–8) are an important component of Oregon statewide K–12 public school system, which serves over 545,000 students. Oregon invests an average of approximately $15,500 per student into the development of quality academics, as well as additional program diversifications and student-centered methodologies. The majority of the best middle schools in Oregon are distinguished from their peers due to low student-to-teacher ratios, the availability of immersion programs (dual language), the presence of a curriculum based in the area of STEM, and the availability of early-career electives (coding, journalism, etc.). Some statewide programs, such as the Adolescent Literacy Framework and real-time Online School Report Cards, provide further opportunities for improved instructional quality and transparency, enabling students to achieve long-term academic success.
