New Mexico middle school education system was making substantial progress in 2025 due to targeted state expenditure and research-supported instruction. As of 2022, there was a 10-point increase in Reading proficiency (44%) across all grades (3-8) statewide, with over 72% showing improvement year over year. In closing, with 504 middle schools in New Mexico supported by expenditures averaging $11,912 per pupil, 44.2% of the state total budget was allocated to education. Low pupil-to-teacher ratios, in addition to the implementation of Structured Literacy Programs, have produced positive results in New Mexico leading middle schools in terms of Growth and Meeting the Needs of their Students with Equity Focus.
