Utica Community Schools—the second-largest district in Michigan—serves northern Sterling Heights and neighboring areas, educating about 25,500 students, including over 8,000 elementary learners across 38 schools in 2024–25. The district maintains a ˜18:1 student–teacher ratio and high diversity, with many schools serving a majority of economically disadvantaged families. Elementary achievement varies: Harwood Elementary stands out with 49% proficiency in both reading and math, while Schuchard Elementary reports 38% reading and 34% math proficiency.
To close achievement gaps, UCS deploys district-wide literacy frameworks, MAP-based diagnostic supports, and replicates best practices from high-performing schools like Harwood. By focusing on data-driven interventions and equity strategies across all campuses, Sterling Heights is working toward more equitable and effective elementary education outcomes within a diverse suburban district.
