The South Dakota K-12 education system has been noted for its impressive results, linked to the low class sizes of the state and an increasing emphasis on preparing students for college. The state has over 290 public secondary schools with a favorable average student-to-teacher ratio of 1:14. Together, these factors contributed to an all-time high of 86 percent of students graduating from senior classes during 2025; ACT composite scores were also well below the national average. By 2026, mandatory state testing using the ACT will increase alignment between the test and higher education expectations. Additionally, through transparent reporting on standardized test scores and demonstrated student ability and performance, the best high schools in South Dakota have received praise for their measurable success, equitable outcomes, and student-centered academic curricula.
