Salem is a busy gateway city in southern New Hampshire with a population of about 30,000. It has a mix of suburban living and big shopping centers. The main public school in the area is a high school, and there are also several charter schools that focus on the arts and technology. Local schools are known for having a lot of students take Advanced Placement (AP) classes. One school is even in the top 15 in the state for the breadth of its college curriculum. The system puts a lot of emphasis on being ready for a career and doing well in school, which keeps it in the top 25% of public high schools in the state.
