The main goal is to help girls become leaders and do well in school. The school has about 10 students for every teacher. This means that students can get more one-on-one help and guidance than they would at a larger, more traditional school. GLA's main focus is on preparing students for college and helping them build self-esteem, critical thinking, and leadership skills. The main subjects are English, math, science, and social studies. These subjects are made better by activities that promote communication, problem-solving, and civic engagement. Most of the students are women, and they come from many different places, just like the rest of Wilmington. Around 30% of students are good at reading (ELA) and 46% are good at math. These numbers show that people are still trying to get better grades, especially in math. The state and local governments give GLA money to run a public charter school. It also has tests like the SAT that help students get ready for college.

The North Carolina Charter School Review Board gave Girls Leadership Academy of Wilmington a 10-year charter renewal, the longest term possible, because the school has done well in school and grown. The school will hold a Founders Day event in February 2026 to celebrate its 10th anniversary of helping girls become leaders through academics and leadership.
