Jackson, the capital of Mississippi, is a historic city with about 144,000 people living there. It has a unique city life and is known for its strong ties to the Civil Rights Movement and soulful arts scene. The public school district in the city is the third largest in the state. It has six traditional high schools and a number of specialized programs, as well as a number of well-known private academies. The main goal of the education system is to help students do better in school and get ready for college. Recent data show that there is a plan in place to improve teaching and learning across the district. The states accountability model has given "A" ratings to a number of schools in the area.
