Bangor, which is called the "Queen City of the East," is the main regional center for northern and eastern Maine. About 32,000 people live there. The city high school education is very good, and its public schools are always among the best in Maine. The system has a strong STEM and humanities curriculum, and students do well in school. A number of schools in the area have received National Blue Ribbon awards for their academic performance. Families still choose Bangor as a safe and academically challenging place to live because of its historic charm, close proximity to outdoor activities, and schools that focus on college preparation and specialized academies.
