Within the Poway Unified School District, Mt. Carmel High is the best public high school for grades 9–12. It has about 2,000 students and a student-to-teacher ratio of 24:1. It is known as one of the best schools in the area. The school has a diverse student body, with 65% of students coming from minority groups. 17% of students are also considered economically disadvantaged. It has a 58% Advanced Placement participation rate, which makes it one of the best schools for academic rigor. The school has a high level of academic success, with 80% of students being proficient in reading and 53% in math. Taking the SAT and ACT tests also helps students reach their college goals. The school is in the Rancho Peñasquitos area and is known for having a great reputation in the community and winning awards for its performing arts programs. Overall, its strengths are its great literacy results and its commitment to creating a college-preparatory environment that is both competitive and supportive, and it is one of the best high school in California.

Mt. Carmel High School is now officially a 2026 Kindness Certified School. This is because it took part in the annual Great Kindness Challenge and is committed to making the campus a friendly place to be. The school is currently improving its college-bound culture by holding Joint Community College Nights and special workshops to help 11th and 12th graders get ready for college and the SAT/ACT. The performing arts department is also getting ready for its 2026 spring production of "Mamma Mia," which will show off the school's many talented technical theater and musical performers.
