People know it as one of the best schools because it focuses on social-emotional learning and community service. Because it is the only high school in its district, it has a diverse student body, with 100% of students being minorities and 97% of them being economically disadvantaged. With a 32% Advanced Placement participation rate, the school is one of the best at helping each student individually. The school says that 35% of its students are good at reading and 5% are good at math. The school makes sure that students take the SAT and ACT tests so that they can go to college. The school is in the historic downtown area and is known for its strong community reputation and dedication to social justice. Its main strengths are its welcoming environment and its promise to give all students equal access to education that will help them become leaders in their own communities, and it is one of the best high school in California.

King-Chavez Community High School recently added new dual enrollment courses in partnership with San Diego City College. These courses let students earn college credits while they are still in high school. The school is also starting a special internship program for seniors in the 2025–2026 school year. This program will pair seniors with professionals in their field to give them real-world experience. The campus also recently upgraded its multimedia lab with professional-grade software to help students who want to work in the digital arts or graphic design fields.
