The school has about 200 students and a student-to-teacher ratio of about 18:1, which means that each student gets a lot of attention and can learn in a way that works for them. It is known as one of the best schools for students who do well in non-traditional settings because it focuses on each student's progress and readiness for graduation. Independence High (Alternative) has a total of 84% minority students, and 90% of the students come from low-income families. Recent academic data shows that 32% of students are good at reading and 5% are good at math. The school focuses on alternative paths, but students are still encouraged to take standardized tests like the SAT when they are relevant to their career goals. Independence High School is still improving its individualized learning model by offering weekly, in-person student seminars and specialized "Lion's Café" tutoring sessions for academic help and peer connection. The school has recently added the Edmentum online platform and IXL diagnostics to offer personalized English and math lessons to all of its students. This semester, the campus is putting a lot of emphasis on skills that will help students get jobs. They are doing this by offering flexible independent study paths that let students balance their schoolwork with their personal lives.
