Merced, home to approximately 90,000 residents, serves as the entrance to Yosemite National Park. Located in the San Joaquin Valley, the city is known for its relaxed, agricultural way of life. It is also home to the newest University of California campus. There are a number of public high schools and a few private ones in the city. The schools have many different options, and more than 85% of the students are minorities. The school system main goals are to help students do well in school through Advanced Placement (AP) classes, getting ready for college, and vocational training. Local schools have received praise for the significant growth of their students and the dedication of their teachers.
