Charleston Development Academy is a public charter school in Charleston serving approximately 170 students in grades kindergarten to 8th grade. With a student–teacher ratio at approximately 13:1. Academically, the school places a priority on both academic growth and character development, with reading and math performance steadily improving, and generally matching state performance levels. The student population is mostly African American, but also includes Hispanic, white, and multiracial students. Families appreciate the supportive environment, focus on discipline, and community-engaged instruction, which can help prepare their children for success in middle and high school. The charter school is located in downtown Charleston, where the median house prices are around the $500,000 to $700,000 range. Although smaller, Charleston Development Academy is often mentioned among the best elementary schools in South Carolina, due to its close-knit community and emphasis on student achievement.
