Top 10% School in New Jersey
Ranked 30 of 257 in New Jersey
Top schools in Middletown TownshipWalking onto the grounds of Nut Swamp Elementary on Nut Swamp Road feels like stepping into a neighborhood school with roots. The playground echoes with childhood laughter, teachers pause to greet parents at drop-off, and the hallways carry the soft hum of steady learning, not frantic rush. The campus belongs to the community, as much as the community belongs to it.
At Nut Swamp, approximately 500 students attend from kindergarten through fifth grade. The classes are kept manageable with a student-teacher ratio of about 13 :1, which means teachers have room to notice when a student is struggling or when they’re ready to push ahead. On the academic front, the school performs well compared with statewide benchmarks. Roughly 65 percent of students reach math proficiency and around 66 percent in reading. In comparison with nearby elementary schools within the district, such as Lincroft Elementary and Middletown Village Elementary, Nut Swamp holds its own—parents say it offers the same strong academics, but with a slightly more relaxed vibe. Living near Nut Swamp comes with the benefits typical of a well-established suburban community. Houses are nice, streets are tree-lined, and rentals reflect the demand for good schools. While exact rental figures fluctuate, you’ll often find three-bedroom homes or townhouses in the area with higher monthly rents because families prioritize the school zone. (Local housing data suggests the median home value is in the $800,000+ range, which gives a rough idea of what rentals tend toward.) As for alumni, there aren’t big celebrity names tied to Nut Swamp, but plenty of past students stay local becoming teachers, volunteers, community leaders. The pattern says something: kids who start here often give back here. That sense of continuity gives the school a quiet strength.

Being Updated
In October 2025, Nut Swamp Elementary held a “Culture & Kindness Week”, where each class explored another country’s traditions, prepared short skits and hosted family-led discussions in the gym. Families stayed for refreshments, students proudly showed off their work, and the hallways lit up with global art and handmade flags.
1. What kind of environment will my child find here?
A. Friendly and steady. Teachers know many students by name, there’s less rush and more room to learn in their own time.
2. How are parents involved?
A. Very much so. From volunteering in classrooms to organizing family nights and cultural events, the school encourages parent involvement as a normal part of the routine.
3. Does the school offer programs beyond standard lessons?
A. Yes. There are special projects, music and art opportunities, and occasional cross-classroom collaborations where students create presentations and host peers or families.
4. How does Nut Swamp help students who need extra support?
A. Teachers use small-group sessions, peer-partnering, and flexible grouping so that students can move at the pace they need whether to catch up or to go ahead.
5. What do families say they appreciate most?
A. That the school treats kids as individuals. It’s academically solid, but it doesn’t lose the human part where children feel seen, not just “classes passed.”
