See top schools in Rocky Mount
G.W. Bulluck Elementary sits on Nashville Road, surrounded by quiet neighborhoods where kids still ride bikes to school in the mornings. It’s a community-driven school that serves roughly 520 students from kindergarten through fifth grade. The atmosphere is warm and familiar, most of the teachers have been here long enough to see siblings from the same families pass through their classrooms. The student-teacher ratio is about 15:1, which matches the state average and helps maintain close attention to individual learning needs. In North Carolina, around 51 percent of students meet math proficiency standards. Bulluck’s rate is slightly lower, near 35 percent, but what stands out is the steady improvement over the past two years.
Teachers have focused on group reading circles, practical math exercises, and peer-tutoring sessions that make lessons more relatable. Compared to nearby schools like M.B. Hubbard and Benvenue Elementary, Bulluck shows a similar academic profile but stronger consistency in attendance and participation. Families who live nearby appreciate how affordable Rocky Mount remains. A three-bedroom home in this part of the city rents for about $1,100 to $1,250 per month, depending on proximity to schools and shopping areas. Though there aren’t any publicly known alumni in the spotlight, many former students return to volunteer at community events or mentor younger learners, a quiet tradition that gives the school a sense of continuity and heart.
