Estes Hills Elementary sits just off Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, tucked behind a row of tall oaks that have shaded this part of Chapel Hill for decades. The school has that classic neighborhood feel, a mix of new families and alumni parents who once studied here themselves. There’s an easy warmth to the place. Teachers greet every car in the drop-off line, and you can tell they mean it. Around 400 students call Estes Hills home, and the class sizes stay comfortable, roughly one teacher for every fourteen children. That closeness shows in how classes work — small reading groups, open conversations, and teachers who know the story behind every essay or drawing.
North Carolina’s average math proficiency sits near 51 percent, but Estes Hills usually lands much higher, close to 75 percent, a point of pride for both staff and families. It’s often mentioned in the same breath as Glenwood and Morris Grove, two nearby schools that share similar academic strength. Still, parents often say Estes Hills feels “a bit more grounded”, academic but never pushy. Homes near the school carry the calmness of Chapel Hill’s older neighborhoods. You’ll find porches, quiet backyards, and the sound of cicadas in the summer. A three-bedroom rental in this area typically falls between $2,000 and $2,400 per month, depending on the street. It’s not the cheapest part of town, but families say it’s worth it for the sense of community and the reliability of the schools. Over the years, several former students have returned to the district, a few as teachers, one as a local journalist, and another who now works with the town’s Parks and Recreation team. There may be no big celebrity names here, but there’s a quiet kind of legacy that keeps this school’s spirit alive.
New Playground Name
We are so excited to announce the name of our new playground! Following a school-wide and Robinson community vote we narrowed a large list of names down to four. Since our students will be using the playground on a daily basis, we gave them the final vote! 476.....

Being Updated
In October 2025, Estes Hills Elementary hosted its first “Curiosity Fair,” a student-led showcase that turned the gym into a maze of homemade experiments and art installations. Instead of competition, the event focused on creativity and collaboration. Parents wandered through with coffee cups and big smiles as students explained how rainbows form, how bridges hold weight, and why recycling matters. The fair ended with a standing ovation for the teachers who guided it all.

4. What cultural or creative opportunities do students enjoy?
