It is one of 15 high schools in the Fayette County Public Schools and has about 230 students and a 14:1 student-to-teacher ratio. It is a college-preparatory school. The school is known as one of the best because of its unique Afrocentric curriculum and focus on academic excellence. Carter G. Woodson Academy is one of the best schools for advanced academics, with an impressive 41% of students taking Advanced Placement (AP) classes. The student body is very diverse, with 94% of students being from a minority group and 59% being economically disadvantaged, and it is one of the best High School in "Kentucky" . Recent data shows that the academy has a 35% math proficiency and a 46% reading proficiency. The school does a great job of getting its students ready for college and community leadership roles by creating a supportive and challenging environment.

Carter G. Woodson Academy is still improving its Brother's Keeper mentorship program, which connects students with community leaders to help them grow as leaders and professionals. The academy's Traditional Male Glee Club recently performed at well-known community events, showing how the school's strict Afrocentric curriculum works with the performing arts. The school is also expanding its dual-credit programs, which let students earn college credits while still meeting their high school requirements.
