Ranked 166 of 200 in Connecticut
See top schools in New HavenWexler/Grant Community School is a public PK–8 school in New Haven, Connecticut, that teaches kids in their neighborhoods. The school has about 217 students and a student-teacher ratio of about 12:1. The school puts a lot of emphasis on getting involved in the community and getting Title I help, which helps provide wraparound services and a safe place to learn. Almost all of the students are from minority groups. About 63% are African American, 30% are Hispanic, and a small number are multiracial. About 94% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, which shows that there is a lot of need in the community. A big problem is that students aren't doing well in school. According to several school review sites, only 8% of students are good at math, and about 14% are good at English Language Arts. The school is a Title I school and follows the standard district curricula, but there are no special magnet or gifted programs. SchoolDigger says that spending per student is pretty high, at about US$23,700 per student. This means that a lot of money has been put into resources. According to Niche, the Dixwell neighborhood around it is urban and community-oriented, with a median home value of about US$263,000. Overall, Wexler/Grant Community School is a place where people are very dedicated, but its academic results show that there is room for improvement.
