About 508 students go to the school, which serves students from kindergarten through sixth grade. Houston Elementary has about 22 full-time equivalent teachers, which keeps the student-teacher ratio at 23:1, which is the same as the district average. The school uses a standards-based curriculum that is in line with California's academic standards. It focuses on core subjects like math and English language arts. To meet the needs of a wide range of students, academic intervention and student support services are available. The student body is very diverse, with a lot of minorities and 88% of students coming from families with low incomes. There are 50% female and 50% male students, so the gender distribution is even. Funding and spending per student are in line with what the district and state give to public schools.
