After the San Diego Unified School District decided to change the name of the campus in the Rolando community, Clay Elementary has been gaining more attention locally. The reason for this is the long, standing concerns regarding the school's historical namesake. A renaming committee earlier this year organized community forums with families, staff, and residents to hear their ideas of the new names which would reflect the values and be inclusive in the local area. This was a part of a districtwide initiative aimed at ensuring that school names are in line with the community's priorities.

The effort to alter the name concluded with actions taken by the official board and conversations in 2025 which led to both the support and disagreement of parents. Some community members are pleased to have people who better represent diversity and shared values honored, whereas others are more emotionally attached to tradition.
