About Martha Black
Martha Black is an independent college advisor who has guided high school and transfer students since 2007 toward colleges where they can thrive academically, personally, and professionally. Her work centers on in-depth interviews and assessments to understand each student’s strengths, interests, and emerging career directions, then uses that insight to shape thoughtful college and major choices.?
With a background in marriage, family, and child counseling and experience as a creative writing teacher, Martha looks beyond admission to focus on persistence, graduation, and life after college. She emphasizes resilience, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration as essential skills for a rapidly changing world, helping students find environments where they can “bloom” as individuals and contribute as global citizens. Martha has also advised first-generation and low-income students through College Summit workshops at UC Merced and UC Berkeley, supporting them in building best-fit lists and drafting personal statements.?
