About the Innovator

Ryan’s Micro Math project ingeniously uses a Micro:bit to create a multiplication table generator for young learners, triggered by pressing the “A” button. Assigning a random number from 1 to 12 to a variable, it displays that number’s times table—such as 7 x 1 = 7 up to 7 x 12 = 84—on the LED screen, offering a fun and educational way to practice math with coding.

Helping my little brother with his multiplication homework gave me an idea, so I decided to create my Micro Math project with a Micro:bit. I wanted to press a button and see a random times table pop up to make math practice more fun. It’s been cool learning how to use the Micro:bit to show numbers and help with school stuff!

I set up my Micro:bit so that when I press the “A” button, it picks a random number between 1 and 12 and saves it in a variable—like if it picks 7. Then, my code runs and shows the 7 times table on the LED display: 7 x 1 = 7, 7 x 2 = 14, all the way to 7 x 12 = 84, scrolling one by one. I had to figure out how to make it multiply and show each answer, and it’s awesome to watch the lights spell out the math!

I’m thinking about how to make this even more helpful next time! Maybe I can add the “B” button to pick a new number, or make it show a smiley face when I get to the end of the table. I could also try adding sound with the Micro:bit to cheer when it’s done. I’m happy I’m learning how to mix math and coding with my Micro:bit, and I can’t wait to show my brother how it helps with his times tables!
